What you should know when choosing your car warranty plan

Choosing a warranty plan is more than just decide whether you want to go online directly through a provider or accept an offer from your dealer. Car extended warranties are several levels of coverage, with some cover wear or overheating, while others only cover mechanical breakdowns.

You may have heard of coverage "bumper to bumper" before, but what does it mean anything? What is needed and what is just fluff? Before purchasing, be sure to iron out the details so you don't become one of the claims court.

You might ask, "do I need to buy a warranty plan, or will be covered by the warranty of the manufacturer of my car?" In some cases, people have purchased the extended warranty coverage to two years, only to discover that they had already been covered well by their manufacturers.

According to the site of consumption CarSmart.com, the best coverage is about sports cars, luxury high-end as Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Rolls-Royce, which are covered up to 999,999 miles. To the next level, you're covered for five years (or 60,000 miles) If you are driving a Mitsubishi, Hyundai and Kia, Infiniti.

You are covered for four years (or 50,000) km if you have an Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Hummer, Isuzu, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Maserati, Mazda, Mercedes, Mini, Porsche, Saab, Volkswagen and Volvo. You may want to consider purchasing a further guarantee if you are rough on your mid-range vehicle or if you buy a low-range vehicle from Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Saturn, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Ford, mercury, Nissan, Pontiac, Suzuki, Subaru, Scion or (which guarantees producer cover only 3 years or 36,000 miles.) If you drive a GM 2008 or later, then it will be covered for 100,000 miles or five years.

There are some tricks for buying a warranty plan. On the one hand, you don't need a warranty on a new car or a car that is less than 3 years/36,000 miles. Manufacturer's warranty will take care of all that is needed. Some new car warranties are only for 2 years or 24,000 miles from the date of service (the time the car is purchased), while other new car warranties begin after the factory warranty expires, so make sure that you see in writing what warranty plan that you're buying.

On the other hand, you should realize that the newer the car, the cheaper the warranty is. The warranty company bets that aren't much of a liability.

Before choosing a plan, sit back and honestly think your strategies of short and long term. As you are planning to save for car repairs and maintenance? How long will it take to repay the loan? After paying their lender, some people continue to put that money into a General Fund to save for repairs.

Others invest in a bank CD or money market investment account to save in the long term. Or it can be to your advantage to purchase extended warranty coverage.

Common faults include: differential and transfer case 4 x 4 (with an average cost of repair of 1,100 dollars), the air conditioner and heating system ($ 700), brakes ($ 350), the cooling system ($ 465), drive axles and differentials ($ 500-$ 1000)electrical systems ($ 800), engine failure ($ 2,000), fuel ($ 500) and steering system ($ 600).

Do your homework and see what issues are most commonly associated with your particular make and model, and then devise a reasonable plan.
